Top 10 Best Makeup Product Tips and Tricks

Tip 1 is your makeup can only look as good as your skin does, so it all starts with great skincare. Find yourself a great skincare routine that consists of a cleanser, toner, day moisturizer and a night moisturizer. Don't forget the seasons too, your skin will dramatically change in the winter and summer as the weather does. A few great add on products you can add to your routine are MAC's "Fix+" it's a spay fluid of vitamins and minerals, infused with a blend of green tea, chamomile, and cucumber. It can be used before makeup to add moisture to your skin and/or after to finish/set makeup or even refresh it a couple hours later. The other is also a MAC product called "Strobe Cream" it's the ultimate quick fix for the skin, It is infused with iridescent particles and makes your skin glow, it also boosts the look of dull or tiredlooking skin.

I am 100% loyal to MAC eyeshadows but there are other great brands out there. Nars makes great eyeshadows, as well as Makeup Forever, but I stick to MAC because I get a discount there for being a makeup artist and I love their palette system, as it's made for professional use. In my opinion higher quality brands only make a big difference if you're going for bright, bold colours. One brand that is fairly inexpensive and has a great variety of colour choices is NYX. The best bang for your buck will come from using an eye primer

I am a self admitted mascara junkie and have tried almost every brand on the market. I find mascara is a very personal preference and depends on your "type" of eyelashes. I would say mine are pretty average, not too long or short, and not thick but not too thin either. One of my all time favorite mascaras that I always go back to is L'oreal's "Voluminous" and a trick I have discovered is using a mascara like Cover Girl "Lash Blast" (that has a plastic brush) first to define and separate them and then use a volumizing mascara to add drama and thickness (L'oreal Voluminous)

I have found that you have to spend a bit more money on eyeliner, cheap drugstore brands seem to just melt and smudge off. If you're going for a pencil look my two favorites are Makeup Forever's "Aqua Eyes" and Urban Decay's "24/7". If you're going for a dramatic classic eyeliner look I recommend a gel eyeliner applied with a eyeliner brush, a few of my fav's are MAC's "Fluidline" and Bobbi Brown's "Long Wear Gel Eyeliner" they are both water resistant and will last all day, it's also great for your upper and lower water lines (tightlining) The gel eyeliners take a bit of practice to learn how to apply them properly, so a great way to go is the new felt tip eyeliners. Kat Von D makes a great one in a variety of colours, available at sephora. Smashbox, MAC, and Hourglass all make one as well, just be careful as many of them aren't water resistant.

Foundation is a tough product for a lot of women, it was the first high quality product I ever bought. The difference between drug store brands and department store brands isn't necessarily quality but more so colours, I had a hard time finding a colour that matched my skin tone, as do most women. Higher end department brands tend to group their colours in warm and cool (Yellow/pink) and drug store brands don't which can result in a muddy looking colour. If you're lucky enough to find a brand that matches your skin tone and works for your skin then go with it. A few drugstore brands that I find are long lasting and have pretty good colour choices are Revlon "Colorstay" and Maybeline "Superstay 24 hours", be careful when applying because they dry quickly. One of my favorite foundations right now is Bare Escentuals "Bare Minerals" it's a mineral powder foundation, so it feels like you're not wearing any makeup at all, but it has great coverage and lasts all day. I used to work at Sephora and I recommended it to all my customers and I've gotten a few of my friends hooked on it as well.

If I would recommend one easy quick, inexpensive, easy trick to women to take their makeup look to another level it would be to contour and highlight their face. Our faces aren't flat and the sun and lights hit each plane of our face differently and create shadows and reflect light. Think of when you get a sunburn on your face and where it burns. Just like our cheeks are naturally rosy, so why use one colour of foundation to make it all one shade? If you're going to do one and not the other, I would contour, you can start out by just using your current bronzer or darker powder shade (maybe your summer colour) but use it in strategic places(see picture below). So many companies make a 3 in 1 blush, bronzer and highlighting compact which makes it super easy and inexpensive. You can contour and highlight with matte colours or shimmers, I find too much shimmer doesn't work for most people, but it can for some, but it never looks good in photo's because of the way it reflects light. I find it's best to use either your contour or highlight in a shimmer and the other in a matte. It may take awhile for you to find the colours that work best for you, some people like their highlight with some pink in it and other more white/frosty. For darker skin tones you can't really use the white powders because it will make your skin look ashy, different shades of bronzer usually works best for that.

Ladies, I can't say enough how important eyebrows are, nothing drives me more crazy that a beautiful girl with beautiful makeup, but she's put no effort into her eyebrows. I am a victim of teenage over tweezing and now I'm left with thin, sparse eyebrows that I have to fill in everyday. So my advice to you is go see an eyebrow specialist, I go every two weeks but you can get away with every 46 weeks depending how dark your hair is and how fast it grows in. For you light haired girls I would recommend using an matte eyeshadow colour, one or two shades lighter than your natural eyebrow colour and use an angle brush to fill them in and make a more fluid line and then use a clear mascara or even put some hair gel on an empty mascara wand to make all your hairs flow in the same direction. For darker haired girls I would use a brow pencil, MAC makes a great one that is super thin for more natural looking lines and I use an eyeshadow over top to set them and make them last longer, but my all time favorite product is Makeup Forever's eyebrow corrector, it's waterproof and even lasts through a gym workout and a day at the beach. It's a cream/gel that comes in a tube and you apply it with an angle brush.

I'm not going to go too much into lips because there's so much to talk about them, as far as colour goes, anyone can rock any colour, you just have to have the confidence to own it! Lip liners go a long way in making your colour last. A few of my favorite products on the market right now are Revlon's "ColorBurst Lip Butter" they feel like a chapstick but have colour like a lipstick, they feel amazing and they have about 15 different shades. Another Favorite gloss of mine is MAC's "Cremesheen Glass" It's a lipgloss that isn't sticky and sloppy, it's smooth and feels like butter, the colour selection is limited to nudes and pinks, but that's the look I love right now. I love dark eyeshadows and if you go dark on the eyes, go lighter on the lips!
